About the National Contractor Index

BUILT BY THE INDUSTRY, FOR THE INDUSTRY

The National Contractor Index is a comprehensive public registry of licensed trade contractors across all 50 states. We exist to make contractor vetting faster, more transparent, and more reliable for owners, general contractors, and project managers.

Our Mission
THE PROBLEM WE SOLVE

Anyone who has ever had to build a bidder list from scratch knows how broken the process is. Hours spent searching Google, cross-referencing spreadsheets, calling numbers that are disconnected, chasing down license verifications from state websites that haven’t been updated since 2009.

The National Contractor Index was built to fix that. We index licensed contractor data directly from public state licensing boards — every active license, every trade category, every city — and make it searchable in one place. No self-reported listings, no pay-to-play rankings, no advertising. Just clean, verified public record data organized the way the industry actually works.

Whether you’re a project manager putting together a MEP bid list for a healthcare facility in Grand Rapids or a homeowner trying to find a licensed roofer in Tampa — the answer should take seconds, not hours.

How It Works
THE REGISTRY MODEL

Unlike lead-generation platforms that charge contractors per lead and rank results based on advertising spend, the National Contractor Index operates as a true public registry. Here’s how it works:

1
DATA SOURCED FROM STATE LICENSING BOARDS
Every contractor listing originates from official state licensing databases — LARA in Michigan, DBPR in Florida, and equivalent agencies in all 50 states. License numbers, trade classifications, and status are pulled directly from public records and updated regularly.
2
FREE LISTINGS FOR EVERY LICENSED CONTRACTOR
If you hold an active state contractor license, you’re already in the index. Basic profiles — license number, trade, location, and status — are visible to anyone searching the registry at no cost. No signup required to search.
3
CONTRACTORS CLAIM AND VERIFY THEIR LISTING
Contractors can claim their existing listing by verifying ownership through their state-registered email address. Once claimed, they can add contact details, upload a logo, and specify their bid capabilities — so owners and GCs have everything they need to make contact.
4
VERIFIED BADGE — THE TRUST SIGNAL
Contractors who complete verification receive the NCI Verified badge on their profile. Verified listings appear first in search results, display full contact information, bid capabilities, and project types — giving them maximum visibility when owners and GCs are building their bid lists.
Our Principles
WHAT WE STAND FOR
01
PUBLIC DATA, ALWAYS
Every contractor in our index is sourced from public state licensing records. We don’t manufacture listings, accept payment for inclusion, or allow contractors to inflate their credentials. What you see is what the state has on file.
02
NO PAY-TO-RANK
Search results are sorted by verification status, not advertising spend. A verified contractor appears above an unverified one because they’ve confirmed their identity — not because they paid more. We don’t sell rankings.
03
BUILT FOR THE GC, NOT JUST THE SUB
Most contractor directories are designed to generate leads for contractors. We built NCI for the owner or GC doing the searching — the person putting together a bid list at 6am who needs accurate information fast, not a sales funnel.
04
INDUSTRY LANGUAGE
We organize trades using CSI MasterFormat divisions — the same system GCs and estimators use every day. Division 21 is Fire Suppression. Division 23 is HVAC. If you work in construction, the index speaks your language.
The Team
WHO RUNS NCI

The National Contractor Index was founded by construction industry professionals with direct experience in commercial project management, subcontractor coordination, and site supervision. We built the tool because we lived the problem firsthand — and we were tired of waiting for someone else to fix it.

For Contractors
ALREADY IN THE INDEX?

If you hold an active state contractor license, your basic listing is already live on the National Contractor Index. Owners and GCs searching for licensed subs in your area can already find your name, license number, and trade.

Claiming your listing is free. Once claimed, you can add your contact information, website, and company logo. Upgrading to a Verified listing — starting at $149/year — unlocks priority placement in search results, bid capabilities, project types, and the NCI Verified badge that signals to owners and GCs that you’re legitimate and ready to work.

Verification uses your state-registered email address to confirm ownership. The process takes less than five minutes.

Data & Accuracy
ABOUT OUR DATA

All contractor data in the National Contractor Index is sourced from publicly available state licensing board records. We update our data regularly but cannot guarantee real-time accuracy for all records. License status, contact information, and business details may change between update cycles.

Always verify a contractor’s current license status directly with the issuing state agency before awarding a contract. The National Contractor Index is a reference tool — not a substitute for your own due diligence.

The National Contractor Index is not affiliated with any state licensing agency or government body.
